Palio from Casole d`Elsa |
|
| Description : |
The Palio di Casole d`Elsa is a horse race, ridden by jockeys, which takes place every year, the 2nd Sunday of July at 18.30 in honor of San Isidoro. Its origins are lost in antiquity.
The race is done, riding bareback, on a test track in dirt that has the unique characteristic to develop hill and, therefore, makes the race particularly challenging for both horse and jockeys.
It 'a prize called the "Roman" or "prize along" that has a starting point different from that of arrival and therefore does not circulate as the Palio of Siena. A week before the Palio is characterized by evening parties and dinners in the districts. The participating districts are 6 and correspond to specific territorial divisions: Rivellino Pievalle, Countryside, whiting, Horse, Monteguidi.
Each Contrada has its own color and a badge that identifies it. E 'regulated by a statute, led by a Captain and represented by a President.
A specific regulation approved by the Town Council should regulate all procedures related to the event, giving the Council the management of the Palio race and all the steps that precede it. The first phase of the Palio, which provides the Saturday before the race itself, are carried out: the extraction battery qualification, the qualification courses el'abbinamento horses, who have reported the 6 best times, at 6 districts.
The second phase begins with the traditional Sunday morning Mass in honor of the Patron Saint Isidore, patron of farmers. Continues in the afternoon at 18 with the blessing of the horses in Freedom Square, opposite the Collegiate Church of St. Maria Assunta, then move on the racetrack, where, at 18.30, will run the Palio.
At the district winner of the Palio, as a reward, around 19.30 will receive the banner (also grabs or rag), which is generally a banner created by artists engaged for this purpose.
In the days following the victory, of joy, singing and dinner, open to all, will characterize the life of the district and its winning Contrada. |

Custonaci Nativity Play |

The magic of the birth of Christ is replayed every year in Custonaci. The entire town, young and old, is involved in this true theatrical representation. The Nativity Scene is created in the Scurati cave (also called Grotta Mangiapane) and includes a recreation of a real village, creating a snapshot of country life in Trapani in the late-19th century.
Since 1983, the same location has hosted the evocative Nativity Play. Over the past 20 years, the scenes have become increasingly intricate and now it is almost like taking a leap back in time to relive that wonderful night.
Any Traveller who is in Custonaci for Christmas will be captivated by the images, sounds, colours and smells as they marvel at this initiative that stimulates all five senses.

The Luminara of Saint Ranieri

Every year on the night of the 16th of June the enchantment of the Illuminations of Saint Ranieri is renewed on the streets running along the river Arno (the so-called Lungarni). In fact, following an ancient tradition the Pisans celebrate their patron saint, St. Ranieri, of the following day. There are about seventy-thousand wax candles which at every edition are meticulously set in smooth and white glasses and fixed then onto wooden white-painted frames, modelled in such a way as to exalt the outline of the palaces, of the bridges, of the churches and of the towers reflecting on the river.
The exceptional appendix to this scenery is the leaning tower, enlightened in the same old fashion with oil lamps, set also on the crenulations of the city walls in the area encircling the Piazza dei Miracoli.

The Regatta of the Maritime Republics - Pisa |

Since 1956 the cities of Amalfi, Genoa, Venice and Pisa have participated in the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics.
The event, introduced for tourist reasons, evokes the past glory of the most important episodes of the story of the four Maritime Republics.
